One factor that is often overlooked by even the largest of sites that hurts their search engine optimization is the failure to reroute web crawlers from old content on the sites. Many large businesses create several domain names to protect their sites names from being exploited.

These empty sites can detract from a search engine optimization ranking. Sometimes a business will post all of their content on all of the domain names and then forget about the content on the majority of them. The businesses forget about the extra sites but web crawlers don’t.

Legacy content that is left on an ecommerce site can greatly take away from search engine rankings. Many sites just delete the interior links and leave the pages live. Many times these old pages will contain duplicate or conflicting information that is on a newer page. The web crawler will search through both of these pages and the rank will be based on both of the sites rather than just the newer updated site. Many of the efforts to increase the ranking of one webpage can be detracted from by an outdated forgotten version of the same site.

To keep a site at the top of search engines it is imperative that old content is rerouted to the updated pages that have been optimized to reach high search engine rankings. A well updated site that is carefully managed will have a much greater level of traffic and that will lead to a much greater level of profitability.
