If you have been a parent for a while you will probably have noticed that your child imitates many of the things that you do or the way that you say things. One of the biggest ways to teach your children how to behave is by showing them the right way to act. Set an example by acting the way you want them to. If you are teaching a child manners make sure that you are very polite to them and use your please and thank you’s.

Positive reinforcement and focusing on positive aspect rather than negative can go a long way. Make sure to tell your children what they are doing right on a daily basis. Compliments stick with children much better than insults do and they will make them feel better about themselves. When you are telling your child what they are doing wrong it is helpful to not focus on the bad action and instead tell them what they should be doing while avoiding telling them that they are doing something wrong altogether.

If your child is jumping on their bed ask them if they would please lay down on their bed. Asking them to lay down lets them know that laying down is the proper thing to do when in bed and indirectly tells them that that they should not be jumping. Discipline never needs to result in spankings, kids can be made to understand what is right and wrong through reasoning and consistency, violence is never the right option.
