One of my uncles was an extremely healthy man and very enthusiastic about his work. He used to work in a roof shingles industry and used to earn well. After his retirement, he had planned to live his life happily with his family when the whole world collapsed for him. His apparently ‘normal’ cough was diagnosed as due to mesothelioma and the family went berserk over it. Upon closer interrogation, it was evident that the asbestos exposure during his tenure at roof shingles industry was responsible for this mess.

Many people like my uncle are falling prey to the asbestos menace and despite efforts to curb it, the employers are busy earning money and not paying heed to their employees safety needs. Mesothelioma cancer occurs due to inhaling of fine asbestos particles in the air. They erode the long mesothelium and cancer starts developing. There is gap of almost 1 to 2 decades (or even more) after asbestos exposure to symptoms of mesothelioma to develop. No wonder all government efforts are now directed towards stopping this preventable cancer.

There are many mesothelioma associations in west those are trying to create awareness among masses and punishing employers those are not executing necessary safety arrangements in their premises. However, more awareness is needed and also more research into the treatment of mesothelioma cancer. Today despite medical advances, the prognosis of the cancer is poor unless diagnosed in first stages where surgery is possible to remove the cancerous portions of the lung. But due to very common form of disease picture, most cases are diagnosed late and the patient needs to bear agony of investigations and treatments. Just beware of asbestos exposure. Your tenure may land you in grave trouble!
